Laparoscopy and Minimally Invasive Surgery
Laparoscopy is a minimally invasive surgical technique now being offered at Russell Ridge Animal Hospital. This service is available to clients of all GVA hospitals with our inter-hospital referral program. Utilizing video equipment and small specialized instruments, many abdominal and thoracic (chest) surgeries can be performed through incisions less than 1 cm in length. This minimally invasive method allows for better visualization of structures and organs for the surgeon, which can decrease anesthesia time and risk of bleeding or infection. It also reduces post-operative pain and allows our patients to get back on their feet more quickly.
Our equipment also allows us to perform advanced diagnostic procedures, such as:
-
Arthroscopy - evaluation and treatment of disease inside joints
-
Rhinoscopy - visualization and sampling of tissues deep within the nasal passages
-
Endoscopy - exploration of the proximal intestinal tract (esophagus and stomach), diagnostic sampling, and sometimes removal of foreign bodies
-
Otoscopy - visualization of ear canals, tympanum (ear drum), ear polyps
Common laparoscopic procedures include:
-
Spay (ovariectomy)
-
Gastropexy (stomach tacking) - recommended for many large breed dogs
-
Intestinal biopsies
-
Liver biopsies
-
Cholecystectomy (gallbladder removal)
-
Exploratory laparoscopy (exploration of the abdomen)
