Enjoy baking but feel like your pup gets left out of the fun? Don't Fret! Here are 13 fall inspired treats that your pup will enjoy, but are healthy too!
1. Pumpkin Oatmeal Spice Treats:
These pumpkin treats will make any dog go crazy and are dog safe!
Ingredients:
1/2 cup canned pumpkin
1/2 cup water
2 tablespoons olive oil
1/2 cup oatmeal
2 1/2 cups whole wheat flour
Directions:
- Preheat oven to 375° F.
- Combine pumpkin, oil, and water in a large bowl and stir well.
- Gradually mix in oatmeal and flour to form stiff dough.
- Roll dough to 1/4″ thick and cut with your choice of cookie cutters. If the cookies stick, sprinkle a small amount of flour on surface.
- Bake on non-stick cookie sheet for 35 minutes.
2. Sweet Potato Chew Treats:
With these sweet potato treats lasting almost as long as traditional raw hide, they are sure to keep your pups busy while enjoying a healthy treat! Heads up this is a more time intensive process as you're dehydrating the sweet potatoes.
Ingredients:
Two to three large sweet potatoes
Directions:
- Preheat oven as low as it can go. Anywhere around 175° F will work.
- Cut thick slices from the sweet potatoes length wise. The thicker the better!
- Arrange the slices on a baking sheet and put on the top rack of the oven.
- Let them cook for anywhere from 4 to 8 hours (Told you it was time intensive!); less amount of time for softer, more chewer treats and a longer amount for dryer and tougher treats.
3. Candy Corn Dog Treats:
These fall staples are no longer just for humans! Make candy corn shaped treats for your furbabies too!
Ingredients:
1 ½ cup whole wheat flour
½ cup oatmeal
1 egg
½ cup chicken or beef stock
For candy corn icing:
3 Tbsp. all-purpose flour
1-2 Tbs. water
Food coloring
Directions:
- Preheat oven to 350° F.
- Combine Flour, Oatmeal, Egg, and Chicken or Beef Stock in a large bowl and stir well.
- Divide in half.
- Roll dough into 1/2" circles.
- Using a knife, cut the circle in half, then in half again, then cut each 1/4 in half to make 8 triangles.
- Make the icing.
- Combine flour with the water until it forms the consistency of paint.
- Divide mixture into 3rds.
- Use red and yellow food coloring to make the orange and yellow frosting.
- Paint the icing on to the cookies using a new paintbrush.
- Place on baking sheet.
- Bake for 20-25 minutes.
4. Apple Donuts:
You heard that right, Donuts!! These are so good, you might even want to save a few for your self too!
Ingredients:
2 cups cake flour
1 1/2 teaspoons baking powder
1/4 teaspoon baking soda
1/4 teaspoon kosher salt
4 tablespoons olive oil, at room temperature
2 extra-large eggs at room temperature, beaten
3/4 cup 100% no sugar-added apple cider
1 apple, diced very fine or grated
Directions:
- Preheat your oven to 325°F
- Grease donut pan
- Mix together dry ingredients: cake flour, baking powder, baking soda, and salt.
- Add in oil, eggs and apple cider. Continue to mix until it begins to thicken.
- Add in diced apples, mix until just blended.
- Pour batter into donut pan.
- Bake for about 8 minutes (the tops of the donuts should spring back when pressed).
5. Carrot Cake Dog Cupcakes With Cream Cheese Icing:
Yup! Carrot cake too!! Bonus, this recipe will last for 2 weeks in the refrigerator, and up to 2 months if frozen!
Ingredients:
2 cups grated carrots
3 eggs
1/2 apple sauce, unsweetened
1/2 rolled oats
3 cups wheat flour
Frosting:
1/4 apple sauce, unsweetened
227 gm fat free cream cheese
Directions:
- Preheat your oven to 350°F
- Lightly spray muffin tin
- In a large bowl stir together the carrots, eggs, apple sauce. Set aside.
- Slowly mix the flour and rolled oats and stir until well blended.
- Spoon mixture into the muffin tin. Press the dough into place with damp fingers to prevent it from sticking.
- Bake for 25 minutes.
- Cool completely on a wire baking rack.
- Frost when cool and serve.
6. Carrot and Banana Treats
Carrots and Bananas are the perfect healthy combo!
Ingredients:
2 1/2 cups whole wheat flour
1/2 cup cornmeal
1 bunch fresh carrots, finely chopped or grated
2-3 fresh bananas, peeled and mashed
1 beaten egg
1/3 cup vegetable oil
1/2 cup cold water
Directions:
- Preheat your oven to 350°F.
- Combine all dry ingredients in a large mixing bowl.
- Add carrots, bananas, egg, oil, and water until they create a workable dough.
- Roll dough until about 1/2" thick and cut.
- Place cookies on a baking sheet and bake for 35 minutes.
- Turn off over and leave cookies for another 35 minutes to allow them to harden up.
7. Squash Dog Biscuits:
This is a perfect recipe for the fall months as squash is in full harvest, and of course, it's super festive!
Ingredients:
1 large yellow squash, cut into equal chunks
1 (6 ounce) container of plain Greek yogurt
2 tablespoons grated Parmesan cheese
1/2 cup brown rice
2/3 cup ground oat flour
Directions:
- Preheat your oven to 325°F.
- Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
- Bring a medium sized pot of water to a boil. Add squash and cook for 10 minutes or until tender.
- remove from heat and mash until smooth.
- Mix all ingredients with mashed squash in a large bowl, adding one at a time.
- Place 1 tablespoon worth of the mixture on the baking sheet about 1" apart.
- Bake for 10 to 15 minutes.
